April is National Pet Month

April is National Pet Month
So besides hopefully raising awareness about responsible dog ownership this National Pet Month, we will also be fundraising for the benefit of the so many needy pets out there. Of every sale that we do this month on our website, we will donate 10% to these two amazing charities. So please make sure to shop away this month and know you will be supporting our two favourite charities!

We love National Pet Month! It is such a great initiative and couldn't agree more with the goal of the organisation.

"We love pets! With the help of our supporters we raise awareness of responsible pet ownership through educational campaigns, we celebrate the benefits of our pets and encourage fundraising for the nation’s needy pets."

First of all, we love pets as well, so we are on the same page there! Secondly, we fully support raising awareness for responsible pet ownership - for two specific reasons.

Anicura's CEO Bella is a rescue from Battersea Cats & Dogs Home. Although she was not severely mistreated, we were informed that Bella was owned by an elderly couple who lived in a flat. Bella is a large dog (Staffie x Rottie) and especially back then was a highly energetic dog (she was 1,5 years old when we got her) that clearly needed space and lots of exercise. On top of that, she lived in the little flat with her brother! We can only imagine the mayhem in that household. Unfortunately, although Bella is the sweetest little soul, she was completely untrained and at times very scared especially when she thought she had done something wrong. We can only imagine that she was reprimanded for - in her mind - good behaviour. The essence of this story, when you get a dog, make sure the breed and type of dog fits with your household and behaviour! Too many times dogs end up in rescues because the dog, through no fault of its own, does not fit with the way a family lives.

Secondly, as a company we often work with charities, not only to financially support them as much as we can, but also support individual dogs who have come into rescue centres with skin issues. Getting a dog (or cat) means taking care of them, including plenty of exercise, feeding them properly and taking care of their skin. Too very often pets end up in rescues because the initial excitement of owning one has worn off. Sometimes dogs come into rescues with really bad skin due the coat not being groomed, malnutrition or general neglect. Sometimes a skin condition appears or becomes worse due to the stress caused by being in kennels (despite rescues making the situation as comfortable as possible for the dog).

Skin allergies and other skin problems are often caused by a compromised or weakened immunesystem. A bad start in live will contribute to that bad immunesystem and which, topped with a stressed live, means lots of itchy skin, flaky skin or even worse, hot spots and eczema. Luckily there are many great owners who adopt these unwanted pets who are willing to invest in their health through great food and our natural skincare products.

Because of all these reasons, we have decided to focus on two amazing charities this National Pet Month. Both of whom we know always work superhard supporting two breeds notouriously victims of being misunderstood and therewith often ending up in rescues. The first is German Shepherd Rescue Elite, the second Staffie & Stray Rescue. Additionally, both breeds are many times Anicura customers because they known to suffer from skin problems, be it either as a result of having had a rough start in life or just in general being prone to skin problems.

So besides hopefully raising awareness about responsible dog ownership, we will also be fundraising for the benefit of the so many needy pets out there. Of every sale that we do this month on our website, we will donate 10% to these two amazing charities. So please make sure to shop away this month and know you will be supporting our two favourite charities!

Many thanks & Woof,

Claudia & CEO Bella
